Discover Kingsford, Michigan: History, Industry, and Recreation in Dickinson County

Nestled in Dickinson County in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, Kingsford is a small but historically rich city with a population of 5,139 according to the 2020 census—just a touch higher than the 2010 figure of 5,133. Named after Edward G. Kingsford, a timber cruiser, real estate developer, and Ford Motor Company executive, the city has played an important role in the region’s industrial and cultural development.
A City Built on Industry
Kingsford’s roots run deep in manufacturing. In 1931, Ford Motor Company established a factory in Kingsford to build wooden station wagon bodies. During World War II, the factory shifted focus to aid the war effort, producing 4,190 wooden-frame Waco CG-4 gliders for the U.S. military. Nothing went to waste—scrap wood from the factory was repurposed into charcoal, sparking the creation of the Kingsford Charcoal brand, which remains a household name today. Today, Kingsford continues its tradition of industry with employers such as Grede Foundries and a paper mill located between Kingsford and nearby Norway.
Neighboring Attractions
While Kingsford itself offers plenty, its neighboring city, Iron Mountain, is home to one of the region’s biggest draws: Pine Mountain Ski Resort. The resort features one of the largest ski jumps in the world, the Pine Mountain Ski Jump, which hosts the annual FIS Ski Jumping Continental Cup and the National Ski Jump Championship every February. For decades, it was also the site of the International Ski Jump Championship, drawing competitors and spectators from around the world.
Outdoor Recreation
Kingsford is surrounded by natural beauty and recreational opportunities. The Menominee River borders the city, serving as the dividing line between Kingsford and Aurora in Florence County, Wisconsin. Locals and visitors alike enjoy activities such as:
- Camping and hiking
- Fishing and hunting
- Snowmobiling on the many trails
- Boating, kayaking, and other water activities
