Dockman Vlog: Copper Mine Side Quest — A Northern Michigan Adventure

Every now and then, a job turns into an adventure—and that’s exactly what happened on our latest trip up north. What started as a routine work week for the Waters Edge Dock & Hoist crew turned into one of the most memorable experiences we’ve had yet.

We kicked things off in Watersmeet, Michigan, wrapping up a big boat lift and dock install before hitting the road toward the Upper Peninsula for a series of lakefront projects in Rapid River, Sault Ste. Marie, and Sugar Island. It’s a long haul, but there’s something special about serving the lake communities of northern Michigan—each shoreline, each family, and each project tells its own story.

As always, my crew was ready for anything. We faced down some wild weather, a few mechanical hiccups, and even a stomach bug that hit one of the guys—but that’s part of life on the road. Between long drives, fuel stops, and a whole lot of laughs, we managed to keep the momentum rolling.

When a trailer breakdown slowed us down, we decided to make the most of it. Thanks to a friendly local connection, we found ourselves deep underground at the Calonia Copper Mine—a real hidden gem of the U.P. Exploring the tunnels, seeing the old equipment, and learning about Michigan’s mining history reminded me how much there is to discover in this beautiful state.

Once we got back on track, it was back to doing what we do best—building, installing, and setting up docks and lifts for some of the best lake clients around. From kayak launches to pontoon platforms, every install brings its own challenges, and that’s what keeps this job exciting.

At the end of the day, I wouldn’t trade this work for anything. Traveling with my crew, helping families enjoy their time on the water, and experiencing the beauty of northern Michigan—it’s what being The Dockman is all about.
