Permanent Dock Construction in Livingston County – Built to Last

What’s up guys, it’s the Dockman back again, and I’m excited to show you a custom build we completed here in Livingston County. You might remember when we previewed this project in the middle of winter—well now it’s finished, and this one is a game-changer.

The Customer’s Vision

Our customer was done with the hassle of pulling his dock and boat lift in and out of the water every year. He wanted a permanent, year-round solution that could stand up to Michigan’s ice and weather, while still being user-friendly for boating and swimming with the grandkids.

The Dock Build

We constructed a steel frame permanent dock supported by 15 eight-inch steel pilings, with one pile set right down the middle. This design eliminates posts along the outside edges, giving the dock a cleaner, more open look. The frame is solid welded—not bolted, not pieced together—making it strong enough to withstand Michigan’s seasonal ice push and movement.

For the surface, we used SunWalk decking, our go-to for durability, slip resistance, and low maintenance. Around the entire perimeter, we installed 36-inch black poly bumpers, which not only protect boats but also match the dock’s sleek black steel.

Canopy & Lift Solution

Instead of a traditional boat lift, the customer opted for a freestanding canopy system. LC Covers supplied a Sunbrella Storm-colored canvas with a 36-inch side balance, while Great Lakes provided the aluminum canopy frame. The canopy posts tie directly into the dock pilings for added stability. We also added zipper entries on all four sides, so the customer can roll up panels for access—or just enjoy the view from the boat without staring at a solid wall of canvas.

Family-Friendly Features

Since the customer and his grandkids love to swim, we added an HD flip-up ladder. This keeps it out of the water when not in use, preventing zebra mussel buildup and keeping it clean, safe, and slip-free.

Built for Michigan Conditions

With schedule 40 steel pilings and 3-inch steel tubing, this dock is engineered for Michigan winters. Ice can push and shift with incredible force, but thanks to the welded frame and heavy-duty materials, this dock isn’t going anywhere.

The Dockman’s Takeaway
